We are incredibly grateful to Coast Capital for their generous $13,000 donation in support of our Rapid Access Unit in New Westminster.

Since 2022, Coast Capital has helped us respond to one of the most urgent challenges facing vulnerable seniors: homelessness. The Rapid Access Unit in New Westminster provides access to a private, secure space, nutritious meals, and dedicated housing support. Older adults can move out of crisis and into safety while longer-term housing solutions are secured.

Having the rapid access unit in New Westminster was especially helpful for a recent client named Tom.*

Tom came to SSSBC during a period of significant financial hardship. He was living at Maria Keary; a supportive housing option for up to 20 men who are chronically homeless or at risk of homelessness. Tom was relying solely on Income Assistance and, once program fees were paid at his supportive housing residence, he was left with just $60.00 a month to live on.

At the end of the summer, Tom self-referred to Seniors Services Society and after a thorough assessment, an immediate housing action plan was created. He was placed into the Rapid Access Unit at the Lookout Shelter, which not only offered safety, security and privacy, but three meals per day. Tom stabilized quickly, thanks to the support of Lookout staff.

While his immediate needs were being addressed, the Regional Housing Coordinator connected him with the Rising Sun Villas in Surrey through the Phoenix Society, where he was interviewed and accepted for permanent housing. A rent subsidy will help keep his monthly rent even more affordable ensuring long-term stability.

Tom described his experience in his own words: “I was contemplating living on the streets to get some money. Your organization (SSSBC) helped me out in a hurry, and I had a great experience at the Lookout. Now I have extra money and hope for a safe place to live.”

Thank you to Coast Capital for helping ensure that vulnerable older adults like Tom have somewhere safe to turn when they need it most.
