When Shirley* lost her home in an apartment fire in New Westminster, her life was suddenly turned upside down. In an instant, she lost not only her housing but also many of the personal belongings and important documents she relied on every day. Faced with the overwhelming challenge of starting over at 80 years old, Shirley found herself navigating a housing crisis while coping with the emotional and practical impacts of such a devastating loss.
Recognizing the urgency of her situation, SSSBC worked closely with community partners, including contacts within the City of New Westminster, to identify support and housing options that could help Shirley move forward. As a recipient of the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program, securing stable housing quickly was especially important to maintaining her well-being and financial security.
One of the immediate barriers Shirley faced was the loss of her identification documents in the fire. Without identification, accessing services, completing housing applications, and proving eligibility for housing programs became much more difficult. Through collaboration with City partners, special arrangements were made to help Shirley obtain the bank statements she needed to support her applications and establish proof of identity. This practical support removed a significant obstacle and allowed the housing process to continue.
Shirley met with SSSBC staff to complete a BC Housing application. Together, they worked through the process, ensuring all necessary information was submitted and helping Shirley navigate a system that can often feel overwhelming.
Just days later, Shirley shared exciting news: she had secured housing. To help make this new beginning possible, SSSBC provided emergency financial assistance to cover her first month’s rent and damage deposit. She also received money to purchase some essential household items. This timely support helped remove the financial barriers that could have prevented her from securing her new home, ensured she could move in without delay and allowed her to turn her house into a home.
After losing so much in the fire, Shirley did not have to face the road to recovery alone. With support from compassionate community partners, including the Seniors Services Society, Shirley overcame the many challenges she faced after the emergency. She not only regained her housing, she also regained confidence and the hope needed to rebuild her life.
She shared, “I was never as proud to be a citizen of New Westminster as I have been over the past two months. Through your services, I was able to rise above the sadness and be thankful that I was part of such a caring community.”
