When 63 year old Peter was referred to Seniors Services Society through our Langley SHINE partner, he was facing significant challenges and upheaval. Peter lost his housing in August 2025 when his residence was demolished. He was living in a shelter and receiving disability benefits. The loss of stable housing created stress and uncertainty which exacerbated his physical and mental health.
Peter was recovering from several serious health issues including open heart surgery and stroke. At times, he required a walker to get around. Despite these challenges, Peter remained committed to his well-being. He consistently followed his prescribed medical treatments, monitored his health, and worked to maintain his independence.
As he could live independently, Peter was a suitable candidate for the Temporary Housing Program (THP). Unique to BC, THP provides a furnished studio apartment for 3-6 months for seniors who meet the criteria while staff work with the client to remove barriers and help find suitable permanent housing.
After several months successfully living in THP, Peter moved into a new apartment at Ross Towers in New Westminster.
For Peter, having a stable new home near services and healthcare makes managing his health conditions much easier. He can now reconnect to community and focus on his future while maintaining his independence and well-being. The transition from homelessness to shelter living to temporary housing and finally into permanent housing has helped him regain hope and improved his quality of life.
