When Anthony’s* health began to decline, everyday tasks that many of us take for granted became overwhelming. Already receiving support through our Light Housekeeping Program, his situation changed dramatically after a hospital stay left him even more frail and unable to leave his home. Grocery shopping, something once manageable, became impossible.

Connecting with Anthony presented another challenge. The side effects of his medication had significantly affected his hearing, making phone conversations nearly impossible. Rather than allowing this barrier to prevent him from receiving support, we visited him in person and communicated primarily by writing, ensuring he could fully participate in every decision about his care.

During our visit, we worked together to set up an online grocery delivery account, only to discover another obstacle: Anthony did not have a payment card that could be used for online purchases. Instead of giving up, we took the time to explore solutions, navigating each challenge with patience, creativity, and determination until everything was in place.

Today, Anthony is successfully receiving regular grocery deliveries through our Grocery Order Program. What could have been another barrier to his independence became an opportunity to provide the personalized support he needed to continue living safely at home.

Anthony’s story is a reminder that supporting older adults often means looking beyond the service itself. It means adapting to unique circumstances, removing barriers one by one, and ensuring that no senior is left behind simply because the path is more complicated. Through compassion, persistence, and a commitment to meeting people where they are, our Support Services Program helps seniors maintain their dignity, independence, and quality of life, even when the challenges seem overwhelming.
