Eight of 15 units in the Temporary Housing Program are being reallocated from New Westminster to Vancouver and Prince George thanks to an agreement with BC Housing. The transition started on April 1st.

Some of the units were not being fully utilized due to rapid placement into permanent housing and the fact that many seniors wish to remain in their community, where they have support systems in place.

Our Temporary Housing Program — the only one of its kind in BC —  fills a critical gap by providing safe and private, fully furnished apartments for seniors to live independently for three months while permanent housing is sought. Clients are assigned an outreach worker and receive one-to-one support to assist them in obtaining permanent, appropriate housing. Not every senior is eligible for temporary housing and clients must go through a strict screening process at intake. Click here for more information on eligibility.

From April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, 108 seniors were placed into temporary housing, preventing them from becoming homeless.

“This reallocation allows seniors to stay in their communities, close to health care and other vital services”, remarked Alison Silgardo, CEO, Seniors Services Society of BC. “The fact is, we need temporary housing in more communities across BC”, said Alison Silgardo, CEO, SSSBC. “This not only requires funding, but housing that’s suitable for seniors, close to transportation and services.”

We’re grateful to BC Housing for working with us to recognize and fulfill this critical gap in housing for low-income seniors and we’re looking forward to moving seniors into THP in these new communities.
