The Seniors Services Society of BC (SSSBC) is pleased to announce that the Senior Housing Information & Navigation Ease (SHINE) program has expanded into two new communities: Kamloops partnering with Interior Community Services and Terrace, partnering with the Terrace and District Community Services Society.
With this expansion, SHINE is now serving a total of 12 communities across the province, marking a significant milestone in our mission to support vulnerable seniors who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless.
Launched in 2019, SHINE was created as a pilot project serving just three communities. Since then, the program has expanded and supported over 10,000 seniors by offering housing navigation, advocacy, and wraparound supports tailored to help seniors stay safely and securely in their own communities. From finding safe and affordable housing to connecting them with health and social services, SHINE works to ensure that seniors not only have a roof over their heads, but also the resources they need to thrive.
This year, the Ministry of Health has provided $800,000 in funding to support the continued delivery of the SHINE program. This crucial investment allows SSSBC to partner with grass roots organizations to provide a one-stop-shop for seniors in communities across BC.
“We are deeply grateful for this funding, which comes at a time when more and more BC seniors are facing housing insecurity for the first time in their lives,” said Alison Silgardo, CEO of the Seniors Services Society of BC.
Kamloops and Terrace have both seen increasing challenges around housing affordability and stability, especially for older adults on fixed incomes. By expanding SHINE to these communities, we are addressing an urgent need and bringing proven, compassionate support to even more British Columbians.
Ashley Eaton, Manager of Housing & Tenant Relations at Interior Community Services commented on the importance of the partnership in Kamloops. ‘Having a compassionate and dedicated Seniors Navigator based in Kamloops, who can guide our seniors through the complexities of housing, ensuring their dignity, comfort, and sense of belonging is vital. It’s an important step towards building a community where every senior finds a welcoming place to call home.’
We’re grateful for the continued partnership with the Ministry of Health and for the trust placed in our team by the communities we serve. With each new community, we move closer to our vision where every senior has the opportunity to live with dignity in a safe, comfortable, and healthy home.
