Introduction to Seniors Services Society

SPAN (Seniors Planning & Action Network)

GOALS

Founded in 2005, SPAN, is a group of New Westminster seniors and community service providers who want to improve the lives of New Westminster seniors. Previously called SSTF (Seniors Services Task Force), this senior-led group pursues projects that are identified through research and members’ awareness of seniors’ needs and priorities.

welcomes seniors and service providers interested in volunteering to develop and implement community projects. Meetings are held five times a year, with project groups meeting as needed.

Seniors Services Society acts as the host agency, managing project funding from United Way of the Lower Mainland to support a project coordinator.

Projects have also received funding from: Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and New Horizons for Seniors.

Seniors Engagement Guide (2010 - 2011)

IMBY Fairs: In My Back Yard - Connecting Seniors to Services (2008 - 2011

Since 2008, more than 600 seniors attended five information fairs. They talked with service providers, collected free information, and enjoyed entertainment.

Seniors’ Agency Networking Event (October 2010)

This event will help not-for-profit service providers develop connections and learn more about services available for seniors.

This print and on-line Directory provides a large listing of services for seniors in New Westminster.

Wheelability Assessment (2009 - 2010)

People who use mobility aids volunteered with the City to assess the “wheelability” of Uptown and Downtown New Westminster. The project helps inform City policies, practices and design decisions related to wheelability, and resulted in the publication of neighbourhood wheelability maps.
